Troubleshooting

Some of the most common problems are described here. See also the list of frequently asked questions on the website.

Excel error

When XLSior encounters a major problem with Excel it tries to get round it as best it can, but tells you that there has been an Excel error. It also writes a brief description of the error to the file XLSior-log.log, in the same directory as XLSior.xla. When an excel error occurs you should send email to support@xlsior.com, explaining what you were doing when the error occurred and attaching a copy of XLSior-log.log.

The more detail you can give about the exact circumstances in which the error occurred, the more likely I am to be able to find and fix the problem.

Not working

Sometimes XLSior seems to have stopped working. This is usually because there has been an Excel error, especially if it's one that wasn't handled within XLSior. You can restart XLSior as follows:

  • Check that the XLSior add in is loaded by using the menu command Tools > Add-Ins...
  • Press Alt-F8, or use the menu command Tools > Macros... to bring up the macros dialog.
  • In the top box, labelled Macro name:, type XLSior.xla!XlsRestartXLSior .
  • Click on the Run button.

XLSior should start working again as usual.

Disappearing menu

Sometimes some other workbooks or add-ins may change the menus that you see, removing the XLSior menu in the process. You can reload the XLSior menu by restarting XLSior as follows:

  • Check that the XLSior add in is loaded by using the menu command Tools > Add-Ins...
  • Press Alt-F8, or use the menu command Tools > Macros... to bring up the macros dialog.
  • In the top box, labelled Macro name:, type XLSior.xla!XlsRestartXLSior .
  • Click on the Run button.

The XLSior menu should reappear.

Absent menu

If the XLSior menu doesn't appear when you install XLSior, and you didn't see any messages telling you that you don't have a valid license, then you are probably trying to run XLSior under an unsupported version of Excel. XLSior will only run under Excel 2000 or later (including Excel XP). If you would like to use XLSior but have an earlier version of Excel, send mail to support@xlsior.com. If there is enough demand support may be extended to earlier versions of Excel.

No actions on workbooks

If you have your user preferences set so that XLSior is meant to add sheets to new or existing workbooks when you open them, or update documentation or run tests before saving workbooks, but doesn't appear to be doing so, you may need to restart XLSior as follows:

  • Check that the XLSior add in is loaded by using the menu command Tools > Add-Ins...
  • Press Alt-F8, or use the menu command Tools > Macros... to bring up the macros dialog.
  • In the top box, labelled Macro name:, type XLSior.xla!XlsRestartXLSior .
  • Click on the Run button.

Everything should now work as intended.

Workbook doesn't open

You may find that the About XLSior screen appears when you double click on a workbook to start Excel, but the workbook doesn't open. This happens if there are fewer than 15 days remaining on your license, or if you have an evaluation license.

It looks as if a sheet is being deleted, but all I'm doing is saving a workbook

This may happen if you have a Summary sheet in your workbook, and have your preferences set to automatically update autodocumentation when you save a workbook. It may also happen if you update the Summary sheet in any way. It will only happen if the existing Summary sheet was inserted by an earlier version of XLSior, and has a structure that is inconsistent with that used by the current version.

About screen appears

You may find that the About XLSior screen appears every so often, even when you haven't asked to see it. This happens if there are fewer than 15 days remaining on your license, or if you have an evaluation license.

To stop it happening, you should make sure you have a valid license (see the XLSior website for further information).

The About XLSior screen will also appear if you do not have a valid license. If you do not enter valid license information, XLSior will not start

XLSior won't start

If you get a message saying that there is a problem with the licensing information, and no XLSior menu appears, then something has gone wrong with the licensing information. Send email to support@xlsior.com, attaching a copy of XLSior-error.log, which can be found in the same folder as xlsior.xla.

The reminders to add XLSior functionality or update the Autodocumentation sheets are really annoying

If you don't want to be reminded, you can stop these prompts from appearing by changing your User preferences
