Hiding (and unhiding) sheets
It is often a good idea to hide sheets that most users of your workbook don't need to see and would only find confusing. Sometimes a workbook may contain some sheets where the user can input values, some sheets summarising and analysing the results, and a number of sheets containg the detailed workings. The latter are good candidates for being hidden.
However, there are several problems with hiding sheets.
First, the user may not be aware that the sheets exist, and may find the workbook confusing as it seems to leave out all the calculations. This can be overcome by using the AutoDocumentation feature that provides a list of all the sheets in the workbook.
Second, each sheet has to be hidden individually, using the Format > Sheet > Hide command; or several sheets have to be selected by control- or shift- clicking on their tabs before using the command. There is no way to specify a set of sheets that should generally be hidden.
Third, in order to make hidden sheets visible again the Format > Sheet > Unhide... command has to be performed separately for each sheet.
The latter two problems can be overcome by hiding sheets using the XLSior > Operate on sheets > Hide Sheets... command. It allows you to hide or unhide sets of sheets, to specify a set of sheets that should generally be hidden and a set that should not, and to hide or unhide all available sheets.
Hiding sheets
The XLSior > Operate on sheets > Hide Sheets... command displays a screen that lets you choose which sheets should be hidden and which should be made visible (or unhidden). When you click on the OK button the sheets that you have selected will be treated accordingly.
The screen contains three lists. The left hand list is for the sheets that you want to be visible and the right hand list is for the sheets that you want to be hidden. The middle list is for sheets that you don't care about; sheets on this list will be left as they are. Note that the screen does not reflect the current state of the sheets in any way. It is intended to let you choose what will happen to the sheets, regardless of whether they are currently hidden or not.
You choose which sheets should be hidden or unhidden by moving them into the relevant list using the buttons between the lists. You can select more than one sheet at a time in either list by using the control or shift key while clicking in the usual way.
The sheets you choose to hide or unhide will be remembered the next time you run this command. This allows you to have a set of sheets that are generally hidden, and another that are generally unhidden; all you have to do is to bring up the screen and click the OK button without making any changes.
The sheet X~Summary cannot be hidden because there must always be at least one visible sheet. The sheet X~Internal, which contains information used by XLSior and which is not accessible to the user, is not affected by this command and will always remain hidden.
You can also hide all sheets, other than sheet X~Summary, by clicking on the Hide All button. This will hide all sheets, regardless of which list they are on. Similarly, clicking on the Unhide All button will make all sheets visible (except X~Internal), regardless of which list they are on. If you use either of these buttons no changes you may have made to the lists of sheets will be remembered.
You cannot use the XLSior > Operate on sheets > Hide Sheets... command on a workbook whose structure is protected.
You cannot use the XLSior > Operate on sheets > Hide Sheets... command on a shared workbook, although you can still hide and unhide sheets manually using Format > Sheet > Hide and Format > Sheet > Unhide...
